Project: Real Time Dynamics Simulation of an Electric Vehicle with In-Wheel Motors

The objective of the project is to study the dynamic behaviour of vehicles using in-wheel motors from a mechatronic point of view. It is particularly intended to enable real time simulations in the development process of an all-wheel-drive, all-electric vehicle in order to allow an iterative design of experiments approach.
Symbolic computing based on linear graph theory is to be used to customize an existing multi body model of a car in Maple/DynaFlexPro and enhance it by including the electrical domain modeling of the motors. The formulated set of equations needs to be exported to a numerical solver such as Matlab/Simulink to simulate different manoeuvres.
Applicable tire and motor models have to be found by literature review or derived making reasonable assumptions to adapt the parameters of the current design stage. A high-precision Adams/View model that is under parallel development can be employed to determine mechanical model parameters and verify simulation results.
The validated model permits to examine the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of in-wheel motors. Open loop control should be considered for comparison to ordinary drivetrain setups in order to show the unfavourable consequences and identify performance limitations.
Opportunities and ways to exploit them should at least be highlighted. Furthermore, the project provides wide room to investigate algorithms for closed loop control by implementation of driver models or active subsystems.

The project is part of the Auto21 research initiative, see [1] [2] [3]
