St. George's Day Memorial

We found this on the beach in Zeebrugge. It's commemorating a WWI battle that took place on April 23rd, 1918. April 23rd also happens to be St. George's Day and my birthday. Apparently the British Navy was eventually able to break through the German defences, but only after one of their submarines rammed the sea wall protecting the harbour and exploded. From what we could tell, 5 or 6 British ships were lost and many sailors as well. It was sobering to think that the beautiful countryside we were biking through had been a battlefield in the past.
